CFI Canada Celebrates the Life of Christopher Hitchens
December 16, 2011
Christopher Hitchens, Thank you very much,
It is with deep regret that the Centre for Inquiry Canada recognizes the passing of Christopher Hitchens, journalist, author and public intellectual. His untimely passing marks a loss for our community and for the intellectual world generally.
Armed with his perennial wit and an unabashed ferocity, Christopher enlightened an audience of millions over the span of three decades. While occasionally offensive and brash in his approach, Christopher’s unyielding commitment to truth and reason are an inspiration to all freethinking people. His book “God is not Great” helped to bring non-belief into the public light and for many in our community it was the turning point in their de-conversion.
In his final days, Christopher reminded us all that there are atheists in foxholes, and that the most valuable things in life are not found in ancient texts, but can be found in friendship, family, trust and honesty.
The only road to immortality is to leave a legacy that will never fade. Christopher Hitchens will live forever in his writings, his generosity and his courage.

You read widely Al. It’s good thngis that one’s mind (if you choose) can act like a bi-metal strip in extreme temperature variations. Thanks for the comment. If you ever read the Hitchens book, let me know what you think. I found it a tough slog to read-very dense in references and side comments. But I soldiered on.

I am one Christian who did admire the tteanls and skills of Christopher Hitchens. Through out his years of being an anti-theist, he debated several Scholars, Theologians, Religious Leaders, Philosophers (William Lane Craig), and Apologist around the world. He even debated Tony Blair as to if Religion is good or bad for the world. Several people did their best to witness to him including his own borther Peter Hitchens. Many atheist continue to be in mourning for their fallen hero. I think the irony with Hitchens is that most Christians actually agree with his oppinions on forigen policy and politics while most atheist do never did agree with Hitchens in those regards. Anyways, just about every debate he ever had against religion can easily be found on Youtube. They are a good idea to listen to because many of his fans will continue to use his arguments against us and we should be ready for it.

Michael- a person’s soul is immortal, all right; where it spends eternity is the question. Obviously Mr. Hitchens failed in his pursuit of that particular truth; and all the scientific study in the world won’t “find” it for him. THIS Canadian ISN’T celebrating Hitchens’ life.
