BC Premier Has Made Religion Fair Game For Critique: National Secular Organization

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA—(Marketwire - Aug. 3, 2012) - When BC Premier Christy Clark opted to bring personal faith into a conversation about politics, she opened the door to critical responses.

“The Bible’s been used to justify both sides of many political debates,” said Centre for Inquiry Spokesperson Justin Trottier. “If her morals are tied to her Biblical convictions, Clark now owes it to voters to explain which of the Bible’s many stories and values she selects to follow.”

If religion is how “we understand ourselves”, Clark should also explain where that leaves the over one million atheists and agnostics she represents.

Clark’s remarks may be the result of calculation over the damage her party has taken since the rise of the BC Conservative Party - and its devout Christian leader.

“But Premier Clark failed to include in that calculation consideration of the role religion played in bringing down the political campaign of the Wildrose in nearby Alberta,” said Trottier. “Bringing
faith into politics is risky business.”
