X-Files “Smoking Man” Actor William Davis Discusses Skepticism and the Paranormal in Toronto
Toronto, Ontario - (August 20, 2012) - William B. Davis, who played X-Files arch-villain The Cigarette Smoking Man, will discuss how being a paranormal and UFO skeptic affected his portrayal of a man orchestrating an alien abduction based conspiracy, when he speaks in Toronto for the Centre for Inquiry (CFI) on Thursday, August 23.
The Canadian actor will share stories from his new memoir, “Where There’s Smoke: Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man”, and discuss his varied career, how he came out as an atheist in 1950s rural Ontario, and his new career promoting science education and critical thinking.
“William B. Davis isn’t just a great Canadian actor, he’s a fascinating thinker,” said CFI’s National Communications Director Justin Trottier. “He enjoys arguing - tongue in cheek - that Mulder was the real villain, while defending the series against attacks by our mutual hero, arch-skeptic Richard Dawkins.”
While skeptical explanations usually lose in X-Files episodes, audiences nevertheless fell in love with its skeptical heroine Dana Scully, admiring her rational perspective on the paranormal. “While the X-Files actually questioned these things and lived on the cusp of what’s real and what isn’t, most of the paranormal shows now just assume it’s real,” said William B. Davis.
