The estranged son of “God Hates Fags” pastor Fred Phelps has decided to speak out about his experiences growing up in the most controversial family in the US. He has ‘come out’ as an atheist and denounces the violent and discriminatory rhetoric of his family and their Westboro Baptist Church. In his talk, Nate will outline his family’s campaign, discuss the details of their religious beliefs, share his experiences growing up with the indoctrination and violence of his father and recount the journey since he left home at 18 from fundamentalism to mainstream Christianity to finally letting go of any notion of god.
Nathan Phelps is a writer in Cranbrook, British Columbia. As the estranged son of Fred Phelps, he has recently taken a more active, outspoken role as a counter to their message of hate against the gay community and others. Nathan is the father of four adult children and worked for over 25 years in the printing industry in Kansas & southern California before moving to Canada in late 2005.
