Location: Centre for Inquiry’s national headquarters, 216 Beverley St., Toronto, M5T 1Z3
The Centre for Inquiry is an international education and outreach charitable organization dedicated to promoting and advancing reason, science, secular ethics and freedom of inquiry in all areas of human endeavour. We engage in educational lectures, debates and conferences, coordinate 30 campus freethought groups across Canada, run a robust series of secular humanist social and community services, and undertake political advocacy defending church-state separation, the integrity of science and equality rights for non-believers. CFI Canada is our nation’s premiere venue for secular humanists, skeptics and freethinkers.
1. Fundraising and Development Intern
The fundraising and development intern will work with the National Executive Director, the CFI branch leaders and the National Executive Council on the following:
* Implementing a national fundraising and development
campaign
* Writing donor proposals and marketing plans
* Writing grant applications for private, governmental
and corporate agencies
* Creating a robust membership and donation section on
the new CFI Canada website, to be implemented in conjunction with our web
development team
* Contact potential members and donors by phone, email
and mailing
* Working with branch leaders to raise memberships of
local branches
* Arrange and attend donor meetings
* Arrange and lead fundraising receptions
* Investigate a variety of new funding sources, including:
- renting CFI
- expanding our online store
- providing literature and other items for sale
Desired Qualifications: The candidate should have or be in the process of acquiring a business or finance-related degree. The candidate should have a high level of written and oral communication skills. The ideal candidate would have Canadian charity or not-for-profit experience and knowledge of laws and rules governing, and resources available, for such entities.
2. Web Development Intern
CFI is looking to hire a Web designer or developer for implementing a new web family for the CFI Canada group of websites. Please note that there is considerable flexibility in terms of the program solutions used to implement the new site.
Please note that the following skills relate to the current web platform used at CFI. However, we are flexible to using new web solutions to implement the new site. Therefore we encourage applicants with a different skill set to apply and propose their own ideas for implementation.
Requirements:
Demonstrable experience in standards-compliant XHTML and CSS.
Understanding of Web standards, content management issues.
Strong graphic design skills (Photoshop, Illustrator, CSS layouts, etc.)
Comfort diagnosing configuration and software issues in Web applications.
The following is preferred though not
mandatory:
Some programming experience (some PHP, Javascript, Python, etc.)
Proficiency with an RDBMS, preferably MySQL.
Basic server administration (Either from a UNIX-like command line or cPanel).
Proficiency in one or more Web frameworks or content management systems (PHP
CMS ExpressionEngine experience is highly desirable as the current site is
built on this CMS).
Proficiency in one or more javascript frameworks (jQuery highly desirable,
others acceptable).
UX/IA Experience.
General Skills for Both Positions
For both positions, the ideal candidate will be comfortable in English and
French. An understanding of the freethought/humanist/skeptic community and/or
some demonstration of commitment to the values of free, scientific and critical
inquiry is essential. Since there is some travel access to own car is very
helpful. In addition, access to own laptop is also useful.

Timing/Duration:
This position will run from June 2011 to August 2011. The daily and weekly time commitments are flexible but would work out to about 35 hours/week.
