CFI Launches Community of Calgary!

May 22, 2008

A report from Cliff Erasmus, Chair, CFI Community of Calgary

On February 12th a group of Calgary humanists got together for Darwin Day. It was your typical humanist gathering; good food, drink and the usual heaping of stimulating conversation. As the evening moved on talk turned to the Centre for Inquiry, "should we become more closely affiliated with CFI?" The idea was met with enthusiasm, but how do we go about it? Several months later Calgary has become Canada's first Community of Inquiry.

The excitement of all this is overwhelming for some of us, but we are meeting the challenges head on. We will be having our first film screening of a Discovery Institute documentary on ID within the next couple of weeks. Late June we host author Victor Stenger, followed on June 28 by a talk "Are we losing one our of most cherished rights: Free Speech" with Rob Breakenridge of Calgary's talk radio. We aim to hold a major inaugural event on July 26.

We have been very fortunate in getting our U of Calgary campus outreach program functioning through the summer months, where all CFI events are now held.

I wish to thank the hard work of Justin Trottier, DJ Grothe, Jeff Seaver & Lauren Becker.
