National Post’s Holy Post runs my piece “Why we must teach religion

May 13, 2009

The National Post's new Holy Post project on religion has posted my second contribution on the topic of why Alberta's "parental choice in education" Bill 44 - which would force teachers to notify parents about upcoming classes which “include subject matter that deals
explicitly with religion, sexuality or sexual orientation” (and possibly evolution) - is fundamentally flawed.

Please give it a read and add some commentary.  It is currently at the top of the blog at the following site, although if you visit it later
you may need to scroll further down:  http://tinyurl.com/pkxqer

Since they yanked the last two paragraphs, which I felt made a nice and witty conclusion (they are serious about the 500 word limit
apparently) here is how it was supposed to end:

How ironic that, in order to enshrine gay rights in the Alberta Human
Rights Act, the Conservative government would end up frustrating
teachers enthusiastic to teach about gay rights –  or about the very
Bill that would bring these rights about.

Since faith groups have obviously hijacked the Alberta Conservatives,
might there be a silver lining in that parents would be able pull
their children from class if teachers discuss the Conservative party?

The latter is in reference to a new facebook group "Pull my kids from school if they're taught about the Alberta Conservatives."

It should also be noted that CFI Calgary is spearheading one of the several campaigns in the province in opposition to this development. You can look up the info on facebook at http://tinyurl.com/p37l8g
