Controversial Atheist Ads Disappear From Kelowna Bus Yard
Transit Authorities Unable to Explain ‘Professional’ Vandalism
KELOWNA, BC—(May 4, 2011) - The sudden disappearance of
advertisements from two buses in Kelowna defies explanation. The
notoriously controversial signs, reading ‘There’s probably no god. Now
stop worrying and enjoy your life”, were placed by Centre for Inquiry
Canada, and were due to run for two more weeks.
How the apparent vandals managed to take the banners down in secret is
a question that neither the advertising agency nor the City of Kelowna
have been able to answer. Sources from Lamar Transit Advertising and
the bus yard say that the ads appear to have been professionally
removed.
Jamie Williams, Executive Director of CFI Vancouver, commented: “The
amount of effort put into this demonstrates how necessary the campaign
is. We’re not asking that people agree with us, just that they respect
our right to be heard.”
CFI hopes to replace the ads before the “Imagine No Religion”
conference they are sponsoring in Kamloops this weekend. This will be
the first atheist conference in the region and will feature
distinguished speakers such as blogger P. Z. Myers and Canadian
secular spokesperson Justin Trottier.
Centre For Inquiry Canada promotes reason, science, secularism, and
free inquiry and provides a voice for atheists, agnostics and secular
humanists.
