CFI Vancouver is proud to be a sponsor of the 3rd annual Vancouver SkeptiCamp! - Saturday, March 20, 2010 -
SkeptiCamps are informal, community-organized conferences borne from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. Everyone from casual skeptics to the experienced participate, give talks and get to know each other. SkeptiCamp emphasizes the participation of everyone, from the first-time speaker to the experienced hand. For this event, consider giving a presentation on a topic that drives your passion for science and skepticism. Alternatively, help with the event’s organization. At the very least, be an active participant and engage the speakers and your fellow attendees.
Check out the official SkeptiCamp webpage for more details!
A SkeptiCamp is not your typical skeptic conference. It will differ in three key ways:
1. Openness – anyone with something to contribute or a desire to learn is welcome and invited to participate. Topics are chosen not by the organizers, but rather by their presenters.
2. Participation – because admission is free we ask that everyone contribute in some way, either by giving a talk or helping to put the event together. At the very least we ask that attendees interact with speakers and other attendees.
3. Collaboration – by distributing the organizing effort amongst many, no one person carries too large a burden. By sharing one’s experiences as an organizer we can avoid repeating mistakes and instead build upon our successes.
SkeptiCamps work in concert to distribute knowledge within communities of skeptics, placing intense and substantive events within reach of informal groups of skeptics anywhere around the world.
